Volvo Parking Assistance Pilot is an excellent system that warns of obstacles when you have limited space in front of or behind the car, and is helpful when parallel parking. This system is semi-automatic and can support the driver when parallel parking the car, as long as the distance between obstacles front/rear is sufficient. The car takes over steering the vehicle, and the driver takes operates gears, acceleration and brakes, by following the instructions displayed in the car's driver's information display. Manual mode can also be activated.
When the driver wants to park with park assist, a button on the center console activates this feature. The vehicle will then start to scan the area for an open parking space. When the space is located, the system asks the driver to stop the car ahead of the space and follow the instructions given by the car on changing gears, accelerating, and braking.
When reverse gear is active, the car begins to turn the steering wheel while the driver accelerates and brakes. When the car is in the parking space and is a distance of 12 inches from any rear obstacle, park assist will ask the driver to switch to a forward gear. When the driver engages a forward gear, the system will continue to steer the car into the space. Each time the car is 12 inches from an obstacle, parking assist requests that the driver engage a gear change. Once the car is finished parking, an acknowledgment is given, and control is returned to the driver.
The parking assistance system becomes active when the speed falls below 19 mph, and a sensor will determine the distance to an object in front of or behind the car. When an object is indicated, the car speaker sound level is muted, and a pulsating indicator tone eminates from the car's speakers. The tone begins to sound when the vehicle is approximately 30 inches from the obstacle, and becomes a constant tone when the obstacle is approximately 12 inches from the bumper. The measured distance to the obstacle is displayed on the center console screen.
Different tone frequencies are used order to differentiate between the front and rear systems, and the sound comes from different speakers within the vehicle, front or rear.
The kit includes two front sensors with cradles. The parking assistance feature can be turned off in traffic jams or as needed by pressing the button in the center console.
The parking assistance system may produce false signals as a reaction to external sounds with the same frequency as the system's sensors. Typical sources of interference are the horn, wet tires on asphalt, air brakes and motorcycle exhaust pipes.
